Tip for Teachers from Pinterest:  Use rubbing alcohol to revive your dried out sharpies.

Classroom Winter Decor (Pinterest)

Threaded cotton balls to make snow.  I thought this would be a great cheap way to decorate a classroom for the winder.  Students would love to see these hanging from the ceiling as they enter class.  Also, if they were stored correctly they could be used over and over each year.

Reflecting on Primary Source videos

The day we viewed our peers movies on Primary Sources was a day I was absent from class.  I heard that it was quite a sad day for many.  The videos were filled with sad words and depressing truths of history.  While I was making my own video on the Dustbowl, I found many pictures and two audio clips about people gathering up their belongings to move to California.  It was yet another point in time when I felt the pain of families who suffered.  I cannot even imagine living such an impovrished life.  I have always been so fortunate and it made me see that I cannot get too swept up in my own juvenile problems and forget the rest of the world.  I want to remember those who are suffering so that I can pay attention and help those in my corner of the world.  I can't even believe that after all we know, all we've learned, there is still so much ignorance and hate.  I wish we could truly realize that we are all the same and choose to help others instead of hurting others.

Trade Fair

The trade fair activity that we took part in during class was quite interesting.  It allowed us to experience some of what those in history have been involved in as well as what our students will experience when they participate in this activity.  As I only brought in a singular item to trade, I was able to see what interaction is lost when there is only one need and there is enough supply.  However, after I traded my item I was able to observe others and watched to see what items people were interested in trading for.  Students had different wants and were generous to others.  Ryan gave a donut away at the end and Lauren offered scarves to Amber.  Some items were hand-made, but others were store-bought.  Students bargained in order to get what they wanted.  In an elementary school, a teacher may want to set guidelines as to what students can bring in.  Instead of a trade fair, or in addition to it, you could have students make their own stores and sell their items at a "Flea Market".  They could set the prices and use fake money, then buy other items with that money.  (Expense vs. Profit, inventory, advertising, etc.)

Items students brought in for trade fair:
  • donuts
  • bouquet of flowers
  • scarves
  • cards (b-day, anniversary...)
  • wall decorations
  • teacher sign
  • grab bag
  • candy
  • hair barrettes
  • bookmarks
  • artifacts from foreign countries
  • kids shoes
  • laptop tray

Paper Clip Project

In our Social Studies class we watched a video about a group of teachers and students that worked to collect paper clips from all around the world in remembrance of the victims of the Holocaust.  The Paper Clip Project was quite inspirational.  It was amazing that teachers and students were able to continue it for over a year, in fact for four years!  The part of the movie that hit me the hardest was Sam’s speech.  When he talked about his mother and brother going one way and him and his other brother going another at a concentration camp, it was hard to hear.  To find out what had happened to them must have been devastating.  I cannot imagine losing any of my family members in such a horrific way.  I’m so glad all of those soles were put to rest as you could feel only a small piece of the sadness that was inflicted on so many during the Holocaust.  I hope history never again repeats itself in that way.  The idea of racial supremacy is sickening.  I truly hope that human begin to understand that we are all connected and that we cannot change unless we help each other.

Decades Project

The Decades Project was very thought-provoking and fun.  Our group covered the 1950’s.  We researched at first anything we could find on the decade.  Then we narrowed our searches to politics and daily life.  We learned about some new events such as the “Great Smog of 1952”.  We also learned more about things we had learned in the past such as the “Space Race”, bomb shelters, presidents, advertisements, and inflation.  We all dressed up.  We had Marilyn Monroe, Lucile Ball, Elvis Pressley and a poodle skirt (sock hop) look-a-likes ;)

Some important events from the 50’s:

v  Brown vs. Board of Education – Separate is NOT equal
v  The “Great Smog of 1952” (London) - Started environmental movement
v  Rosa Parks refuses to give up her seat on the bus
v  The Space Race & Fallout Shelters

Here are some of the firsts:

·         Credit card
·         Color TV
·         TV Remote Control
·         Car seatbelts
·         Playboy Magazine
·         Disneyland Opened!
·         1st Organ Transplant
·         1st Atomic Submarine Launched
·         McDonalds Corporation Founded
·         Korean War Begins
·         DNA was discovered
·         Polio Vaccine Invented

Primary Sources Project

I did not enjoy this project as much as others, but perhaps my student would like this type of work.  Although it was not difficult to input the pictures and audio, I had somewhat of a hard time finding the exact types of pictures I wanted to use.  I could only find two audio clips that went with my topic of the “Dust Bowl” and both of them were songs when I was hoping for a recording of someone talking about those times in history.  The presentation we saw as an example was more of what I wanted my project to turn out to look like, but I could not find what I wanted.  That was my first time using that sight and I do think that there was a lot of valuable information and historical pictures that would be beneficial for students to see.  I’m not sure I would have them do the same time of presentation, but I may have them use the pictures and audio recordings in projects.

Shaving Cream Art

I really enjoyed this project!!  It was a way to totally relax and let your mind wander to wherever it may.  I do not see myself as someone with much artistic ability, but I also do not always care what the final result turns out to be.  It is simply a way to express myself and let go of all the stress that comes with adult life.  I love art that involves coloring or painting with your fingers.  It makes me feel childlike when I am able to engulf myself in an art project.  While I am painting or drawing I am usually peaceful and feel free of worries.  I will definitely be doing projects like this in my classroom.  I thought the shaving cream might turn out to be too messy, but it really was not.  As long as we have enough room to do the work and covers for the floor or tables it will be just fine.  The shaving cream added an unusual element making it different than just using paint.  I would like to try to use this technique with different objectives, one creating their own work and another trying to mimic a famous artist's work.

Talent Show

At the end of the semester our Art class had a Talent Show.  There were many different talents seen.  Amber went first and showed us that she was a great Aunt through pictures of her and her nieces and nephews.  Other chose to sing a song, do a cheer, recite a piano piece, teach defense moves, and Clare made two wonderful cheesecakes to share with the class.  Some brought in their artifacts to show like a blanket or dress they had made.  Many showed off their talents through pictures of their artwork, house, dog grooming shows, or talked about their perseverance through challenges.  It was very interesting to see the chosen talent of each person in our class.  I was surprised by more than one of my classmates’ talents.  I had no idea Kim could sketch such beautiful pictures or that Clare could make food with such a nice presentation.

The Tiger Rising ;)

In Art class this semester we got together in groups to compose a play that corresponded with a scene in the book our group read.  We decided to choose a very important place in the story which was when the main character introduced another character (his friend, Sistine) to a tiger that he had found in the woods.  The tiger is the center of the book and leads the characters to their own realizations about life.  I found the book to be interesting but the ending was sad.  I’m not sure if this is a book I would read with my students in class.  Obviously, it would depend on their age, but it also may depend on how well I knew my students in order to gauge how they would react.  I do like that some may be able to relate to the characters which would be beneficial and it could teach them empathy hearing the characters’ point of view even if they could not relate.

Shoebox Activity

The assignment was to bring in items that could fit in a shoebox that you would take with you in the event of a disaster.  At first I thought this would be easy to think of items off the top of my head, but I soon realized I really wouldn't need many items.  What is really most important are my family members and dog.  I would try to grab my purse which would contain any cash and credit cards.  I would also take my cell phone and charger so that I could contact my sister and friends.  Pictures would be nice to bring, but some of my most important ones are buried in a large stack which I doubt I would have time to search through.  My passport and birth certificate are in a safety deposit box at the bank.  In a panicked state I'm not sure I would think to take much else besides survival items like food, blankets, flashlights, batteries, and medicine.  The project made me think about having a survival kit ready to go at my house and in my car.  A backpack would work great with a spare set of clothes and copies of important information.
